Raised in the thumb of Michigan, my faith was nurtured at Grace Lutheran Church, Fairgrove. Baptized, confirmed, and married there, I was very involved in several different activities and events. While in high school, I taught Sunday School and congregation members said I would make a good Lutheran School teacher.

But I had other plans. First of all, I did NOT want to be a teacher like my mother. I knew the hours she put in correcting papers, putting up bulletin boards, and continuing her own education. I wanted to be the NBC News anchorwoman for the Today Show. However, once I got involved in the broadcasting and journalism departments at CMU, I realized that’s not what I wanted for my future either.

I tried my hand at waitressing, retail sales, and banking, but still was not fulfilled. When we registered our daughter for 3-year-old Preschool, Zion (Bay City) was in need of a Teacher’s Aide. I applied for the position and began my new career in August of 1996. By October, I knew I needed to go back to college and get my teaching degree.

Blessed with family and friends who took care of my children, and a wonderful husband who picked up the slack at home while I was attending classes and doing homework, I graduated from SVSU in 2003 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. I double minored in English and Social Studies. I continued working at Zion Lutheran as their Music Administrator, but since music was not part of my degree, the state of Michigan did not recognize my time there towards my permanent certificate.

We transferred to Trinity for the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year where I teach the 3rd and 4th Graders. I like to have a lot of hands-on centers for my students to explore in order to further their grasp of classroom concepts. Over the summer, I’ll be doing some creative thinking as I need to change the layout of my room to possibly fit in 22 student desks. What an exciting time we’ll have! I also plan on furthering my own education and work towards a Master’s Degree in the coming year.
